Students who are studying in levels 6 or 7 next quarter must take one elective course in addition to the reading/writing and speaking/listening classes. Electives give you the opportunity to either focus on a specific language area (grammar, reading, or pronunciation) or study a topic of interest in an ESL classroom (example: conversation, idioms, iBT TOEFL). Each elective meets for 3 hours a week before or after your other classes. You cannot choose the time of your elective.
IUPP, IGSPP, CAP, and AYAP students do not take ESL electives. Please do not complete this form if you are in one of these programs.

Elective Class Descriptions
Advanced Conversation: This class will offer you many opportunities to learn new vocabulary as you use it to strengthen your conversation skills in both speaking and listening by practicing conversation techniques on different topics in small group situations. You will also practice speaking with correct grammar and word choice during conversations.
Advanced Reading and Vocabulary: Students will learn high-level vocabulary for the study of advanced topics. Students will learn new vocabulary and practice strategies to increase vocabulary acquisition. This course is also designed to further develop reading, critical thinking, and vocabulary skills to enable students to successfully read advanced reading selections like essays and news articles.
Business English: This will reach the type of English needed for doing business in the U.S. as well as explain how American business works. There will be presentations, marketing designs, group projects, readings, and discussions. This is a good preparation for a future MBA candidate.
Idioms: Students will develop and improve their use of American idioms (phrasal expressions and slang) through reading, explanation, discussion, and usage. Understanding of the idioms and American culture will be improved through discussion of the origin of these terms. Colloquial expressions will be examined and discussed as well as literal vs. figurative meanings.
iBT Preparation: This class will give you additional practice for the internet-Based TOEFL. Students will become more familiar with the format and content of the iBT. You will also have the opportunity to improve speaking and listening skills helpful for the iBT. This class will be offered in the evening.
IELTS Preparation: This class will give students additional practice for the International English Language Testing System. Students will become more familiar with the format and content of the IELTS and also practice the four modules of the test. This class will be offered in the evening.
